The Animal Communicator
1 x 60’, 2012, HD
What if you could talk to animals and have them talk back to you? Anna Breytenbach has dedicated her life to communication. She sends messages to animals through pictures and thoughts, and receives messages back! Anna can feel the scars hidden under a monkey’s fur or turn a snarling leopard into a contented cat. Wild birds land on her shoulders, fish gather around her legs, and wild baboons lie on her body as if she is one of their own.

Animals build homes for very similar reasons to our own, but they have been doing it for much longer. Built with great complexity, usually with found materials, and sometimes with materials made from their own bodies. In this series, together with ecologist Chris Morgan we investigate how skillful and diverse animal engineering and architecture can be, and explore the intriguing behaviours and social interactions that take place in and around animal homes.

Using incredible microscopic filming techniques, we investigate the story of a tiny invader on its inexorable rise to power – the Argentine Ant. The ant is minute, but that doesn’t prevent it being hugely invasive. Already, the ants have formed the largest super-colony on the planet, over nearly 6,000km from northern Italy to Portugal, through France and Spain. Is it possible to stop their advance towards the north? Scientists have serious doubts.
As a species, we humans have an unattractive tendency to believe in our own superiority. We think we’re the only ones with an inner life, with feelings and morals. But this documentary series explores the unexpected wonders of the animal world and helps to show that nature always has something to teach us. If we could only regard our fellow inhabitants of the planet with wonder and respect, we might find that everyone benefits.

‘Animal Movers’ follows the exploits and daily operations of Pacific Pet Transport, a company specialising in animals transportation. The PPT are a unique bunch of surfers and animal movers and we follow them as they contend with the complex and unpredictable travel needs of their creature customers - and the distinct personalities of the animal owners.

The Appalachians form a vast mountain range, from Georgia in the south to Maine in the north. Its ridges and valleys are cloaked in dense forest and there’s a secret world of rivers and waterfalls. Caves and forest glades are inhabited by bears and red wolves, raccoons and possums, as well as dozens of other lesser known creatures, from hellbenders to cockroaches.
