BULLSEYE PRAYERS The first part of that aspect of the Lord’s prayer that speaks to our personal needs states that, “Give us this day our daily bread.” Viewing that this ‘bread' principally (if not exclusively) applies to the words that proceed out of the mouth of God, then the prayer is seen to be saying the same thing as, “sanctify us with your word.” If you are one of those who have forgotten the Lord’s prayer or consider it better prayed as part of a benediction, just fulfilling all righteousness, it is my hope that you see what you have been missing from neglecting to pray the Lord’s prayer as a potent and powerful intercession. Is this the kind of prayer that you are praying? Do you ever pray that God should sanctify you with His word? Not just that God should sanctify you but with His word? There is a reason why Jesus prayed in this specific manner. The prayer had obviously benefitted Him first, before he prayed it for His disciples (including us). Recall that He said that He sanctified Himself first - meaning that God sanctified Him first, and it was by praying to God to do that. As mentioned earlier, it is a prayer that we must pray for ourselves and also for others. We must be sanctified so that those we pray for can appreciate the need for their own sanctification also. That is also 42.
