I was asked to provide a story describing a favorite trip for the TPCBA
Magazine Travel Issue. I’m not sure that is possible, as I love to travel
more than anything, especially in Europe. When I was younger, I
traveled to Europe a few times over the years and absolutely loved it.
Then, in 2013, my oldest son was heading for Germany to visit a friend who
had relocated to Ramstein Air Force Base, with their family. I was already
paying for one plane ticket to Europe, so my younger son and I planned
a trip to meet up with my oldest son at the end of his trip to Germany.
I told both boys they could select one other destination in Europe; my
oldest selected Switzerland, to go skiing, and my youngest chose Spain. He
wanted to watch a professional soccer game there, and I added Venice as
my selection. We had our three countries mapped out for our 2-week trip
when my youngest also said he wanted to go to Paris to see the Eiffel Tower.
In the end we visited Paris, Zermatt (Switzerland), Venice, Barcelona and
Madrid. We had the best time ever and returned home with great stories
about our adventures. It was so much fun seeing Europe through their eyes.
This was when I started going to Europe whenever possible, to learn more
about world history, to see castles, walled cities and any UNESCO World
Heritage sites.
If you have never been to Europe you really should visit their larger cities,
such as Rome, Venice, Paris, Barcelona, Berlin and London. The larger
cities around Europe have something for everyone whether it be tours,
museums, food, history, shopping or whatever. Personally my three favorite
‘big cities’ are Rome, Venice and Paris. Once you have checked these larger
cities off your list I would encourage everyone to branch out and visit some
of the smaller cities too.
My favorites are:
Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Germany: It is a spectacular medieval old
town that has a completely intact wall surrounding the city, which you can
walk around.
Nuremberg, Germany: Another medieval walled city with one of the best
Christmas markets.
A visit to Neuschwanstein Castle located near Fussen, Germany is a
‘must’. Best castle ever! Can easily be reached from Munich as well.
Mallorca, Spain: A large island (which reminded me of Hawai) with
