INSIDE THIS ISSUE...
SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER PIERCE COUNTY LAWYER
is is the fall edition of your Tacoma-Pierce County Lawyer magazine and has memories of summer Bar activities to keep you warm as we head into the dreary time of the year.
[ PG. 6, 18 and 16 ]
Bar President Merrival’s summer recollections include the Young Lawyers’ Casino Night event, and Lawyerpalooza at the Duenhoelter farm, both were enjoyed by all who attended. Inside are separate reports for each of these events by the Lawyerpalooza Committee and the Young Lawyers, accompanied by as many pictures as we could squeeze in.
[ PG. 8 ]
As a glimpse of things to come, we are reminded that those wishing to run for the Board of
Trustees and other Bar o ces need to get started by ling a “Statement of Intent”. Also that
Bar dues notices and courthouse badge renewals will soon be appearing in your mailbox or email server. ose of you who procrastinate in renewing badges will be subject to courthouse security processing. Picture this: lawyers, a er going through security, trying to put their clothes back together while balancing legal papers, purses and other things, reminding us of the chairli comedy scenes from a Warren Miller ski movie.
[ PG. 10, 11, 12, 13 and 14 ]
If this issue has a focus, it is on our three retiring judges, Judges Ross and Dacca from the District Court and Municipal Court Judge Verhey. Superior Court Judge John Hickman writes about Judge Dacca. Since it is unlikely that he ever tried a case in Judge Dacca’s court we are spared a lot of the usual courtroom stories. e two of them are known to frequent Husky football games together and both hail from Fife. All three judges will be missed.
[ PG. 15 and 9 ]
Our readers are reminded of year-end nominations for the Bertha Snell award and Community Service awards.
[ PG. 29 and 20 ]
For those of our readers still interested in practicing law, we have articles by Nicole Vaswig on Common Misconceptions Surrounding Guardianships and the Uniform Collaborative Law Act (UCLA - RCW 7.77) by Leslie Bottimore. Some of our readers might mistake the initials for the collaborative act
as something about college football. If so, put this magazine down and go get the Sports Illustrated college football preview.
[ PG. 30 ]
Richard DeJean takes us to the mountains of Idaho, describing a program for wounded veterans that gives them a place to relax and get away from whatever combat related devils are troubling them.
[ PG. 34 ]
Editor John Cain writes about Curiosity and its many pathways and gives us much to be curious about. [ PG. 36 ]
For our readers who might have missed this case in the advance sheets, Nigel Malden reviews a book about Rush v. Cobbett, a libel trial from 1799. While the facts of the case are interesting, and not entirely di erent than what might happen today, the processing of the case is fascinating and well worth your attention.
Next up should be a year-end holiday edition and anyone with a holiday story to tell is welcome to send it to us for sharing with the rest of our readers.
