HEAD COACH
Robert
Lucero
Bonifacio “Robert” Lucero is in his 23rd year in
public education, currently serving as Head Basketball
Coach and Assistant Athletic Director at Westlake HS.
Lucero has built one of the most successful basketball
programs in the state. Under his leadership, Westlake
has consistently excelled - reaching the state finals in
2021 and the state semifinals three times. The Chaps
have won 10 consecutive district championships and
have an overall record of 333-59 in his 11 years as
head coach.
Lucero began his career at Nacogdoches HS in 2002
and has since held teaching and coaching roles at
several schools, including Hays HS, where the Rebels
made it to the regional final in 2014.
Lucero earned a bachelor’s in History with a minor in
Kinesiology from the University of Texas at Arling-
ton. He has taught World History, AP World History,
Yoga and has served as Credit Recovery Coordinator.
He has received numerous accolades, including 2022
Westlake HS and Eanes ISD Educator of the Year,
2014 TABC Outstanding 5A Coach of the Year, Cen-
tral Texas Coach of the Year three times and District
Coach of the Year seven times.
Lucero played two years of college basketball at North
Lake Community College in Irving and was named
Defensive Player of the Year in 1997. He was a varsity
letterman in basketball and soccer at Hanks HS in El
Paso.
He and his wife Krystal have two young boys, Bo (6)
and Bryant (4).
