2018 Chaps Football Reflections
“Toughness” is the word that comes to mind when I think of the 2018 Westlake Chaparral Football Team.
I believe toughness begins with strong leadership. This has been evident this season through the great buy-in from the 5 team cap- tains who took every practice as a personal challenge; an absolute warrior in the varsity quarterback position; a senior running back that not many expected to step in and play at such a high level; and a parent group and fan base who were inspired by this tough- ness and committed fully to supporting this program pre-season through playoffs. I would be remiss if I didn’t also recognize the dedicated coaching staff for putting in 7 days a week for 17 con- secutive weeks.
This leadership paved the way for an inexperienced offensive line to become stronger and the returning defensive players to get bet- ter and better, allowing the team to grow to new levels.
Despite having to overcome numerous injuries, these players be- came the undefeated 2018 district champions and enjoyed a long playoff run. The last 2 seasons, these Chaparrals earned a record of 27 – 3 and these seniors set a 4-year high school record at 52
– 7. I believe it is also important to point out that 32 of our 48 graduating student-athletes also managed to qualify for Academic All-State status!
These athletes are all fighters and they are all winners. Besides that, they love the song “September” by Earth, Wind & Fire...and that just does my heart good.
Another integral member of this team is our team doctor, Newt Hasson. Many may not know the level of pride and commitment Dr. Hasson carries for the Chaps. He has been on the Chaps sidelines, rain or shine, since 1985. If it is Friday night (or playoff Saturdays) during football season, you know where Dr. Hasson can be found. In 2009, he was elected to the Texas High School Football Hall of Fame for his services as a team doctor – the first team doctor to be so honored. I, personally, could not be more grateful to him for his service to our team and for his friendship.
GO CHAPS!
