LIFE AND LEGACY OF
Carranilda Louise Higgs-Outten
(TO BE READ IN SILENCE)
For I am now ready to be offered, and the 2me of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight. I have finished my course. I have kept the faith henceforth, there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, with the Lord, the righteous judge shall give me at that day and not to me only. But unto all them also that love his appearing.
On Tuesday, June 8th, 1926, a beautiful baby girl was born to proud parents John B. Higgs and Patience Beatrice Higgs in the beautiful settlement of Bottle Creek, Turks & Caicos Island. They named this beautiful baby Carranilda Louise Higgs. She was the sixth child of eight children.
Carrie, as she was affectionately called, grew into a beautiful young woman. She received her early education at the Bottle Creek All Age School. She aspired to become a teacher and later attended the Teachers Training School in Grand Turk, Turks & Caicos Islands. As time progressed, she grew tired of teaching and left the Turks & Caicos Islands in 1952 for the Bahamas at the request of her older brother Edward. Carrie became the catalyst that pushed her siblings forward.
After moving to Pine Ridge, Grand Bahama she landed a job in retail under the supervision of Mr. Gerald Cash, which prepared her for bigger and better things in her life. It was during this time that she met and married her husband Elliott Outten (deceased.) Seven children were added to this union. Several years later the residents of Pine Ridge moved to Abaco to continue work with the lumber company. To those who knew Carrie, knew that she had a heart of gold. Her love towards others was demonstrated by acts of service. In addition, Carrie treasured her time spent with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. They all loved and respected her. Carrie was lovingly known by her grandchildren for her many sayings. For example, if one had been talking for quite some time, Carrie would say, “You ain’t tired of talking?” ‘’You musy eat the left part of a parrot”.
Carrie possessed an entrepreneurial spirit which lead her to operate her own retail business along with a few other ventures. She made countless trips to Freeport to sell her wares and returned at the end of the week to her family. She helped numerous persons to solve their issues whenever the need arose.
Carrie was a God-fearing woman and accepted Jesus as her lord and savior at a young age, under the leadership of Bishop Joseph M. Swann. She became a member of the Church of God of Prophecy. In her younger years she was very active in the Church. She served as an usher, choir member, and directed many Christmas and Easter productions in her service for the Lord.
She will be greatly missed.
