attracted quite some attention and he was declared insane. His brothers were also not satisfied with this, especially the two teachers Peter and Christof, and turned their backs on him; especially Christof in America considered my father to be dead as did the sons of Uncle Peter who are still living in Germany and who are completely unknown to us. They all think that they have lost out.
Well, my father, as he told me later, never regretted his donation, only once, almost, in 1884 when he was treated very inconsiderately, but more about this later. He had entered the mission house together with my mother without stipulating any conditions and without any reservations and he had only kept 100 Taler = ₤ 15. Initially, Louis Harms did not want to accept the donation, but did so eventually, insisting that a clause be included in the certificate of donation to the effect that if my father or his son of first degree would leave the mission at any time that the mission would then pay them out. The copy of
the certificate of donation is still in my possession. I received it from my father.
