The fifties were a world of change
• The Consent Degree breaks up the studios as a vertically integrated monopoly. The studios no longer own the production, distribution and exhibition of all films, allowing independent studios and productions to get into the industry.
• The War is over, and now 16 million GIs and their families move to suburbia, changing the landscape of American society. Government programs promise them affordable housing, education and jobs. Suburbia is born.
• Movies are threatened by the emerging technology of television.
