AsIwaswalkingoutofmyhome,getingreadytogoteachaPistol201class,Itookonelastlookatmy kids.IwasstruckbywhatIsaw.Itwasearlymorning;thekids-aleightofthem (that’sright,I’m abreeder, andproudofit)werestilintheirPJsandalcaptivatedbytheTV.Whatweretheywatching?Whatwerethey learning?Alofthem,includingthe19-month-old,werewatchingMythBustersandwerelearninghow to up-armoracarusingphonebooks.Myfirstthoughtwas,“Wow,nothingthatcoolwasonwhenIwasakid.” Mynextthoughtwas,“Ifmy2-year-oldislearninghowtodothat,whatarethereal-worldthreatsthatarein ourownbackyardslearning?”
Criminalsandotherthreatsaregetingmoresophisticated.Theyareconstantlyevolvingandimproving techniquesandequipment.Ifmykidsknowhowtoup-armoracar,isitastretchtothinkthatmorethreatswil wearbodyarmor? Isitastretchtothinkthatthreatsaredoingtheirowntraining? Ihadalreadyknownthat thiswastrue,butthatmorningasIlookedatmykids,therealityofithitmelikealightningbolt.Itisa wel-knownfactthatgangsandotherorganizationshavesentmembersintothemilitarytolearnandimprove theoveralabilitiesoftheirgroups.Someofthem arereadingthisrightnow.That’swhyit’simportanttolive
