AdditionalevidencecolectedsuggeststhatHMTDcanundergoanintramoleculardecompositionprocess, aswel.ThemassspectraofHMTDsolutionsagedinthepresenceofwateryieldseverallargeionsinthe massrangeof350-500amu(Figure6).Theionatm/z=413isconsistentwithadimeroftetramethylene diperoxidediaminedialdehyde(TMDDD),thedialdehydecousinofHMTD(Figure4)thatformsfolowingthe lossoftwohydrogenatoms.TMDDD sharessomeofHMTD’sinterestinggeometry,butisfrequently overlookedwhenconsideringHMTD,eventhoughitiseasilyconvertedtothisform.16 MS/MSexperiments
onm/z=413,andthemoreabundantionatm/z=435,bothreportthelossof206amuoraneutral TMDDDmolecule.Increasingamountsofwaterincreasetheintensityofthesepeaks;however,thereisno evidenceoftheisotopicalylabeledwaterbeingincorporatedintotheionsinthisregion.Thus,theevidence suggeststhatwaterfacilitatesthetransformationofHMTD toTMDDD,asopposedtobeingdirectly incorporatedintothemolecule.
