‘Legendary’ Oldham music venue announces its closure
One of the iconic local live music venues in Oldham has announced its closing its doors for the final time two decades since it began.
Whittles, on King Street, which became famous among local music goers for the live music, including artists such as the Cheeky Girls and Chris Slade, from ACDC, alongside countless cover bands, announced on their Facebook page on Wednesday morning (11th April) that they would be closed until further notice.
They simply posted: ‘‘Hi all. Unfortunately Whittles is currently closed down until further notice. Thank you all for all your support over the years. ‘‘
After opening in 2008, Whittles has spent the last decade building up a cult following and even staged events as recently as Good Friday but it appears that the last time gig goers will be able to enjoy the former pub turned music venue.
Tributes have started to be paid on Whittles’ Facebook page.
Andy Pearson said: “You guys at Whittles are amongst the best I’ve ever worked with and bend over backwards for the bands that play there! Thank you for the great nights I had with Hotter than Hell. Great memories!! Hope you’re up and running again soon”
While Carol Lynn Ravey added: “So sad! My favourite music venue! Such great atmosphere and fantastic people! We are lucky to have such talented local musicians, sorry they have lost a wonderful venue to perform in. Had many happy times there, Hope Whittles reopens and in the meantime hope an alternative venue will host the Sunday Jam sessions! xx”
Lee Mason commented: “I played many a gig here when I was in my band April Gunn and was always a great place to play. Good venue decent sound and nice people. This is a sad day for music.”
No reason has been given as to why the venue, which is opposite Mecca Bingo in Oldham Town Centre, has closed but it appears to be the end for Whittles in Oldham.
