C&A Store, the subway (now Spindles Shopping Centre, Henshaw Street
C&A is an international chain of fashion retail clothing stores. They remain active in Europe but closed or sold their 113 stores in the UK in 2000-01. For many years their retail outlets were a major presence on shopping streets throughout the UK but a gradual change in shopping habits, significantly by the late 1990’s, led to C&A’s demise.
Public Baths, Union Street, 1903
The Public Baths stood in Union Street, where the Medtia Place offices are located. There was a seperate public entrance for females from Clegg Street. They were erected in 1854 as a memorial to Sir Robert Peel. The baths were constructed with ornamental vestibules and waiting halls, for both males and females, and at the entrance to the males’ waiting hall was a marble bust of Sir Robert Peel. Facilities include plunge baths, hot and cold shower baths and vapour baths.

Steven John Dickens has a BA. Hons in History (Sheffield University) and an MA in Twentieth Century History (Liverpool University) and is a retired charge nurse and college lecturer. He has always had an interest in local history and social history and has also lectured on the history of the NHS. He has previously written for several local history publications, genealogy journals and magazines; including The Manchester Genealogist and The Journal of the Altrincham History Society.
