Defining the Role of the
Facilitator
The role of the facilitator shifts depending on a variety of factors and a detailed definition of facilitation varies between companies and projects. The title itself can cause confusion.
We distinguish between facilitation, coaching, teaching, training, and consulting skills, and give them each their due. We may use all of them at different moments, but do not mistake them as the same with different names.
Facilitation: moving the knowledge in the room Coaching: encouraging use of the knowledge
Teaching: giving knowledge to use Training: practicing using the knowledge
Consulting: identifying factors that are impacting the knowledge
