Established as a a a a a a a dynamite factory in in in the the the 1800s and incorporated in in in 1900 the the the City of Hercules sits on the the the northeastern shore of San Pablo Bay conveniently located along the the I-80 corridor and a a a a a a a a a half hour drive to both San Francisco and Napa The 26 500 residents represent a a a a a a a a diverse mix of many ethnic groups Primarily a a a a a a a suburban family-oriented community the City has bold plans for a a a a a a a growing town center a a a a a a a lively new waterfront and and a a a a a a new train and and ferry terminal Hercules offers residents a a a a a a high level o of of municipal services for a a a a a a small entity The City provides a a a a a a full range o of of recreational programs including youth/teen and and adult activities and and year-round childcare In the the past the the City hosted several major community events which attracted visitors from the regional area as as well as as local citizens and and the the revival of these events is being considered The City’s Senior Center provides daily senior programs and and activities and and sponsors special community events and and trips Hercules maintains an an an abundance of o open space areas and trails throughout the the community offering the the opportunity for ffor spotting various types of of wildlife and affording dazzling views of of the bay Hercules also has two community and and five neighborhood parks Refugio Valley Park comprises 66 acres and and aligns with a a a a a a a a a walking trail to the City’s Community Swim Center The The five neighborhood parks contain about 32 acres The The City City also has approximately 950 acres of open space areas and trails distributed throughout the the community Together the the the open space areas and and city parks account for approximately 1/3 of the the the total land area area within the the the City Future plans include redeveloping the historic Hercules Point as a a a a a public waterfront park Hercules is is is served by two public school districts: John Swett Unified School District and West Contra Costa Unified School District Private elementary and secondary schools are also available in adjacent communities At the the post-secondary level both public schools schools and private schools schools in the the East Bay provide a a a a a a a variety of high- quality educational opportunities The City Child Care Program provides before-and-after school day care and and pre-school programs Hercules is served by two major transportation routes (Interstate 80 and State Route 4) San Pablo Avenue which bisects the the the City is is is part of the the the Historic Highway 40 the the the main artery into town prior to to to to Interstate 80 being built With recent new growth growth and regionally implemented growth growth management plans future improvements to these transportation corridors are are planned While there are are plans for future ferry and train service Hercules currently has a a a a a a a a BART owned Transit Center that that offers a a a a a a a a variety o of transit options that that help connect the City to the the the the rest of the the the the Bay Area including WestCat direct bus service to and from the the the the Del Norte BART Station the the the the LYNX express bus service to and and from San Francisco and and an an an an an active informal carpool/ride sharing option
