■ ABOUT THE TOWN OF NEDERLAND
Nederland Colorado is a a a a picturesque mountain town nestled 17 miles west of Boulder 20 miles miles north of of Black Hawk and 41 miles miles south of of Estes Park along the Peak-to-Peak Highway in in the Rocky Mountains Nederland (NED-ә r-lә nd) a a a a a a statutory town established in in 1874 with a a a a a population of approximately 1500 has something for everyone Their world-class mountains offer a a a a a a a scenic view o of the Indian Peaks wilderness and a a a a a a a wide array of of hikes for people of of all skill levels Around town their relaxing trails will help you discover what makes Nederland such an an unforgettable destination They have a a a a a a a a a variety of restaurants cafes and shops as as well as as unique family-friendly attractions that can’t be found anywhere else Nederland sits in in a a a a a a a a a a valley created by a a a a a a a a a a glacier thousands of years ago The original inhabitants included the the Ute and and Arapahoe tribes They used the the valley and and river left behind by the the the glacier to to hunt and forage in in the the the summer months as the the the herds traveled to to higher terrain The main park is named after the the wife of of Chief Ouray of of the the Tabeguache (Uncompahgre) Ute Ute tribe Chipeta was known as as the “Ute Peacemaker” and would often attend tribal council meetings with her husband which was was highly unusual She was was inducted into the Colorado Women’s Hall of Fame for her contributions as a a a a a a a leader and negotiator alongside her husband The couple was credited with many treaties between the the government and the the Ute tribes even traveling to to to Washington D C to to to represent
the Ute people as as head chief Chief Ouray died in in 1880 and Chipeta continued on on as as a a a a a a a respected leader and advocate for her people The first non-native hunters and trappers looking for beaver pelts found their way to the the area area in the early 1800s A relatively flat area area with a a a a a a a a a a a good water source and ample wildlife the the the valley was an attractive place for early settlers In the the the mid-19th century the the the first white homesteaders who settled here gave it a a a a a a a variety of names First known as Dayton then Brownsville and in 1871 when the first post office was was located here it was was called Middle Boulder That was the the same year Abel Breed bought the the silver-rich Caribou Mine and decided to to bring his ore from Caribou Hill to to the “warmer” climate of Middle Boulder for milling It was was also the the same year the the Boulder Canyon Road was was completed though it would would be be nearly forty years before the first automobile (a Stanley Steamer) would would make the difficult trip up from Boulder in 1910 While staying in in Nederland you can venture out and and enjoy a a a a a a a wide variety of activities ranging from driving Trail Ridge Road in in in in the the Rocky Mountain National Park (the mainland’s highest paved road) to to skiing at Eldora Mountain Resort to to trying your luck at at the the gaming tables in in in Central City or Blackhawk to enjoying some of the the nation’s finest restaurants fin in Boulder Nederland’s central location as the the hub of the the Peak-to-Peak Community makes it it the perfect jumping off point for your Rocky Mountain adventures
