Bus services need to be upgraded if patients from Greenhill and Lowedges are to be asked to attend a surgery in Jordanthorpe. That’s the view of Sheffield Heeley MP Louise Haigh
Concern over local surgery
I N recent weeks, I’ve heard concerns from many S8 residents about possible plans to move the Meadowgreen
Surgery sites from Greenhill and Lowedges to Jordanthorpe.
I’ve met with local NHS bosses and the surgery about the proposals and they’ve explained the need for 16 consulting rooms, which just can’t be met at the current sites.
But I’m primarily concerned about patients, particularly people who are older or have mobility problems, who will struggle to get to Jordanthorpe without adequate bus services.
At present, only the M17 goes from Greenhill to Jordanthorpe, and there are just eight buses per day. None of these run outside of working hours, and the route doesn’t go through Lowedges, making the problem worse.
I’m therefore calling on South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive to help improve services and make any potential change manageable. Please sign my petition at: tinyurl.com/m17 sheffield.
June has been a busy month - when isn’t? I’ve been in Sheffield taking part in the Abbey Lane Summer Fayre and supporting Carers’ Week, there’s been the Lowedges Summer Solstice Festival, Heeley Festival and I took part in the Big Park Small Run - a 24-hour run round Meersbrook Park to raise awareness and funds for Palestinian causes.
Away from the city, I’ve travelled to Wales to visit officers in Gwent and South Wales Police as part of my ongoing effort to visit every force in the UK as Shadow Police Minister.
This coming month I’ll be visiting Lancashire and Nottinghamshire Police to see some of their challenges and approaches to tackling crime.
As the school year draws to a close, I’ve been informed by the local food banks that the summer holidays can be, for many families, the toughest time of the year.
For too many children, the hot meal they get at school can be the only one they have that day, and losing out on it can have a big impact on their lives.
If you’re able to, you can donate to Grace Food Bank or Lowedges Food Bank directly, or drop donations off at my office at 63 Chesterfield Road, Meersbrook.
