There is a sense of negativity in today’s society when someone talks about being plus size, but the
plus size fashion industry says otherwise. The growth of the plus size fashion industry has grown tremendously throughout the years. Many women have accepted they are plus size which allows each women to fill comfortable in what she wears. Advertisements have also been featuring plus size women as well. With the advertisements of these plus size models this gives the industry a chance to grow in sales and make it bigger and better than what it has ever been.
Society has a huge affect on how young men and women see themselves. For many years the ideal perfect body was anything smaller than a size 12. This causes young adults and children to fix this problem by going on diets at a young age. Even if society hasn’t had an affect on how someone views himself or herself, their peers have made them feel bad. Learning to accept your body for what it is can take a long time. According to The Body Project by Joan Jacobs, Brumberg talks about how young girls focus more on their outward appearance more than
their character. This is why most of the young girls today have issues within themselves because of what society standards of beauty are. Without loving yourself for who you are, inside and out, you allow people to determine your worth. The study “Being Barbie” explains how deeply intertwined a person’s own sense of body influences the perception of what surrounds
them, and consequently it works both ways. A young girl with a developing body in the fragile stages of her pre to pubescent transition will feel differently if she sees a beautiful woman with full legs she can identify with. If that same girl stood in front of images of a size 0 woman, she may feel a sense of inadequacy.
