WORKING CONDITIONS
Communications linework is an extremely interesting and rewarding career as the work locations and type of projects change frequently. The work is done primarily in an outdoor environment that is subjected to various weather conditions but could be done inside as well.
The work is done both overhead and underground. Most of the work is performed during scheduled hours but prepare to be on call when bad weather or storms come through. That’s when the overtime adds up and the paychecks get bigger.
PAY & BENEFITS
SLTC uses the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) and contacts within the communications industry to gauge industry needs and salaries nationwide. For the amount of formal education required, pay for communications lineworkers is excellent and is actually one of the highest paying trade jobs.
The chart (see right) is available at the BLS site and contains relevant wage information for communications linemen. These wages re ect base salaries and does not consider overtime earned. Experience has shown that 15% of the base salary can be added to re ect annual overtime earnings.
