the 2019-2024 period.
Rina, who previously had served as Unpad's acting rector since April 16, was elected as the new rector during the MWA's latest plenary session at the campus' ballroom in Bandung, West Java, on Sunday.
"She was elected by acclamation,” MWA chairman Rudiantara said.
Rina, 58, is a professor at Unpad's School of Economics and Business.
She completed her bachelor's degree in economics at the university in 1984, and her master's degree in industrial management at the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) five years later. Rina's doctoral degree in industrial economics was obtained from Osaka Prefecture University in Japan in 1999.
Born in Kediri, East Java, Rina served as Unpad's vice rector for public administration and finance from 2009 to 2012, the campus' vice rector for planning, information systems and finance from 2012 to 2015 and the secretary for the Research, Technology and Higher Education Ministry's learning and student affairs directorate general from 2017 to 2019.
She competed for the rector position along with five other names, who passed until the final stage of the selection process. They are Arief Sjamsulaksan Kartasasmita, Arry Bainus, Hendramarwan, Kesi Lestari and Unang Supratman.
The board of trustees called on the new rector to bring Unpad into the global top 500 universities list. Unpad is currently ranked in the range of 651-700 in the world.
"MWA will help the rector to prepare for the strategic programs [to accelerate Unpad's rank]," Rudiantara said, adding that programs along with the so-called 'quick win' programs were expected to be completed by year-end.
Rina said solid teamwork was needed to achieve the goal. She also expected students who finished their studies at the university to have abundant knowledge and other competencies.
The selection process for the Unpad rector position was mired in controversy earlier this year, with a rector candidate from the School of Law, Atip Latipulhayat, reportedly filing a civil lawsuit against the MWA's slow progress in finding a successor for former rector Tri Hanggono Achmad, whose term ended on April 13.
Rendy Anggara Putra, Atip's lawyer, said his client had suffered material and non-material losses due to the case. "The obscure process has disrupted Professor Atip's activities," Rendy said previously. (vny)
