Steve will always be my best friend!
By Buddy Walker Mortuary
Hey, I’m out of nuts, what’s going on? Where’s the big guy? I better go scratch on the window, he probably got busy. I’ve noticed through the years how he is always so busy! However, he has never forgotten to fill my food jars. I will just see what’s going on. I know I saw him go in the building this morning. Well, there is the guy he calls Don sitting at his desk, hi Don, what about my nuts? Wait, why are you not smiling? Everyone inside this building goes in looking sad, but usually after the Big Guy has his words with them, they come out with a smile.
That’s why I love that fellow...he thinks about everybody else and puts himself last. He knows to put me first though, for a human he is AOK in my book. My little squirrel ears have heard how others talk about him, they love him, too. He has helped many people, has been involved in so many things in this community and he still shows priority to me. I’m a lucky little guy to have such a good friend, but where is he?
It has been awhile now since I’ve seen my friend Steve. It has given me much time to think over the years of how much I am attached to him and how much love he has shown to me and my squirrel friends and my cat friends and yes even some of those dive bombing birds. I have figured out that he is not coming to fill my nut jars anymore, because someone else has been doing that! I don’t understand it all, but my little squirrel heart is hurting, I’ve never felt like this before.
Things are different here at Walker’s, we cry a lot and we still laugh, especially when we talk about Steve and everything he is to all of us and always will be. We are all still here to take care of you because that is what we do and what Steve always wanted. All of us here at Walker’s, Daughenbaugh’s and Friends Ever After look forward to our future together with compassion, love and support. We will always be here for you!
I love you Steve and I miss you, thank you for all you have done, I will never forget you.
Thanks for listening,

Letter from Catherine Turner
“I feel much the same as that special little squirrel that Steve held so dear. Steve has been a powerful activist for the community and he has always loved that little squirrel, Buddy. Steve has been a wonderful friend to many people and he will leave an aching in many hearts. He will be mostly missed by his family and especially by me. Steve has been a loyal and tender husband and a best friend to me and our fur children. I know he is in the safest place he could be right now and that is in God’s loving embrace! He will never be forgotten and he will continue to live on in my heart!
It seems as though Buddy has invited all of his friends to come say good-bye to Steve, so please do
not be alarmed if you see extra squirrels and cats and birds hanging around Walker’s. Everybody loved Steve and he loved everybody. I want people to know that the Buddy stories will continue. Steve created this iconic little squirrel and his playful world from the deepest love in his heart. I think the public needs to hang onto Steve through Buddy’s eyes and escape for a few moments each month into that special little world. Good bye my dear friend and loving husband, my heart is shattered and hurting, but it also still feels your love so deeply.”
With all my love, Catherine
