PHILOSOPHY STATEMENT
The role of student activities/athletics should be complementary to the role of academic studies in the school setting. As educators, parents, and fans, we must appreciate the power of athletics to promote community support, to entertain, and to shape character. We must also appreciate the power of athletics to corrupt, distort, or undermine the values that we cherish.
Outlined in the code of conduct for student-athletes at Forreston High School are the expectations that they will:
1. behave responsibly
2. use appropriate language
3. treat officials and dignitaries with respect, and their decisions with tolerance
4. compete aggressively, while respecting the right of their opponents to do the same 5. confront failure with courage, fair-mindedness, and resolve
6. respond to the poor conduct of opponents & opposing fans by elevating perfor- mance rather than resorting to words, gesture, or force, the weakest means of response 7. remain modest in victory
8. obey training rules
Participation in activities/athletics can enrich the student’s educational experience, but only if we all remain focused on these values that are fundamental to success not only in the athletic arena, but throughout life as well.
These values are easy to remember when things are going well. Still, it is the values that we demon- strate when things are not going well that will tell others about our nature, and that will determine the likelihood of our turning things around. Be a good sport!
