Concrete Degradation Mechanisms: Corrosion of Steel
When corrosive substances such as chloride ions and carbon dioxide reach the surface of the steel they break the passivation film and corrosion starts. As steel corrodes, it expands. The pressure of this expansion causes the concrete to fracture and eventually break away.
