INAUGURAL 3SCTS MEETING 2022
3 SCTS the inaugural Tri-Society Cardiac & Thoracic Symposium (3SCTS) “Back to the Future: Lessons from the Past, Prospects for the Future”, which was held at the Cairns Convention Centre, Queensland, Australia, from 16 - 19 November 2022, and for those that were fortunate to attend the meeting can attest to the overall success of having the three societies hold their meeting together. This was the first time the societies: the Australian and New Zealand Society of Cardiac & Thoracic Surgeons (ANZSCTS), the Cardiac Thoracic Vascular Perfusion Special Interest Group (CTVP SIG – ACE), and the Australian and New Zealand College of Perfusionists (ANZCP) had held a meeting together. We work as teams yet historically we have met in silos, this was a great initiative by all and a model on which the Societies can build a strong relationship going forward. The meeting took a long time to come to fruition being impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, with the meeting being delayed twice.
The goal of the meeting was to bring to the forefront the multidisciplinary nature of the cardiac operating team highlighting the need to underpin our management of patients with best practices with science underpinning practice as much as possible. The attendance by ANZCP members demonstrated our professions commitment to working toward a stronger multidisciplinary approach. We had 59 registrations from members and trainees, and a further 25 virtual registrations, an enormous attendance.
We were also fortunate to have an extraordinary faculty, and in our speciality this was led by our two international speakers, Dave Fitzgerald and Kenny Shann, who complimented our excellent regional faculty and a free paper program that provided a strong range of topics, with all the sessions being of interest to perfusionists, surgeons and anaesthetists. The strength of the meeting was the integration of the different specialties in the many combined sessions, and the range of international speakers and faculty at the meeting from surgery and anaesthesia. This clearly gave us the opportunity to have an immersive experience in many sessions. I would also
like to thank the contribution of Darryl McMillan, Arthur Preovolos and Jane Ottens for their work in running the simulation program through out the meeting.
The meeting would not have been successful without our sponsors: Platinum Sponsor Medtronic, Gold sponsors Abbott, Corcym, Edwards Lifesciences, and LivaNova, and our supportor and partner sponsors Tourism and Events Queensland, Avant Mutual, Cook Medical Funding and RACS. We also thank all the exhibitors 3M, Advanced BioMedical, ANZSCTS Database Program, AtriCure, Medigroup EBI/Baxter, BD, Device Technologies, Diagnostica Stago, Getinge, Haemonetics, ISMICS, Johnson and Johnson Medical, Mallinckrodt Phharmaceuticals, Medfin and NAB Private Wealth, Osseo Group, Perios, Phillips, Posthorax Aus/NZ, Reid Healthcare, REM Systems, Roche Products, Rocket Medical, Rymed Pty Ltd, Spectrum Medical, TEGO, Teleflex, Terumo Australia, Werfen and Zimmet Biometd and their contribution to the success of the meeting is truly acknowledged.
All meetings can be affected by location, the organising group did an amazing job both with the Convention centre and the events around the meeting, including our College dinner, where we were fortunate to be able to award our 2022 prizes in person, and also acknowledge three life members, Jane Ottens, Clarke Thuys and Alison Horton. The meeting culminated in the spectacular dinner (albeit it was a little warm).
Thanks for the privilege of being the Perfusion Chair of the Inaugural 3SCTS meeting, and in conjunction with Professor Jayme Bennetts and Dr Martin Kim, may we see many tri society meetings in the future.
Thanks
Rob Baker
