P. 6

Dear Friends and Colleagues,
2021, some fresh air, but we are not in clean air yet. Lockdowns, travel restrictions, planning ahead, all challenges in our current COVID-19 order.
The College, I think, got through 2020 pretty well, we lost our 37th ASM in Sydney, only to have Richard Newland and the organising committee provide us with a great Virtual Meeting. I think we are all grateful to Richard for his efforts to make the meeting a great success.
The College also held a number of other events virtually including a SGM and the AGM. From my perspective I think both events were successful and the format of having the AGM’s include a virtual component going forward I think will help open the college to be more inclusive. The AGM always bring change. This year we saw the departure from the Executive of Kuljeet Farrar (Treasurer) and Charles McDonald (Registrar), I would like to thank them both for their excellent service to our community. I will especially thank Kuljeet, as the role of Treasurer for the College is an extremely important role within the College Executive. With change comes new members to the Executive and I would like to formally congratulate Kirri Hogan and Britney Westbrook on their election to the Executive, in the role of Treasurer and Registrar respectively. They have already proved the value of new Members on the Executive contributing actively both in Executive meetings and new directions for the College. They join Carla Zazulak, Jane Ottens and Manel San Pablo on the Executive. Carla renominated for her position, as it had changed from Vice-President to President-elect, reflecting the change in Executive structure that had been voted upon in 2019. Carla will fill this role until the end of the year when she will become President of the College. Ghaz Jabur has joined the ABCP, giving more representation from New Zealand than we have had for some time on the ABCP, which is great, he now joins Jessica Cantrick (Chair), Clarke Thuys, Casey Edwards, Annette Mazzone and Alex Petersen on our Board.
In my last report I was able to highlight many new directions and initiatives undertaken by the College, we have continued to be innovative. The College website grows in value to the membership each week, it now has become reflective of what is going on in our community, being able to be updated by Andrea Hunt (our Administrative Officer) almost on a day to day basis. You will have noticed with recent call for CPD submission it can now all be handled electronically. PIRS has continued to be improved and updated, as has the format of the Gazette on the website. The home page helps to direct users of the website to new and important matters, with the banner reflecting recent changes or highlighted topics on the website.
We also need to congratulate those students who have recently completed their final examinations in the ABCP Structured Course in Perfusion program and have passed
their CCP examinations and we welcome them as Fellows of the College. Similarly for students currently undertaking the course we congratulate you on your recent achievements. We have also had more Overseas Trained Perfusionists become members of the College following completion of the Overseas Trained Perfusionist Equivalency Recognition program. It is fantastic for perfusion in our region to have perfusionists who are actively working in our region, with such a wealth of experience, be part our College. It is excellent recognition of their training and commitment to our profession and we look forward to their continuing contribution to perfusion in our region. The Board is continuing its work with our new online Autotransfusion course being used for the first time this semester, paving the way for future digital developments to enhance the educational potential of the College.
I want to remind everyone our 2021 ASM is coming up rapidly, so please put November 10th–13th, Cairns, in your diary.
We will be having a combined meeting with our colleagues from Cardiac Surgery and Anaesthesia, the meeting will also feature the International Society of Minimally Invasive Cardiac surgery (ISMICS). The Scientific planning committee (Richard Newland, Britney Westbrook and Rob Baker) are meeting with the larger 3SCTS scientific organising group. Our college will be formally meeting Thursday, Friday and Saturday, so you may need to plan to get to Cairns Wednesday, to be ready to go with the first sessions Thursday. There will be sessions combined with the Surgeon and Anaesthetic groups and standalone Perfusion sessions. Registration has opened.
I leave you with this quote:
“Not everybody can be famous. But everybody can be great, because greatness is determined by service”
Martin Luther King, Jr.
I thank each of you for your role in our profession, your ongoing support of the College and together will improve the care and service that we give to our patients each and every day.
Sincerely,
President, ANZCP
