suffer and die in a war that no one, save Hamas and its allies, wanted. My heart breaks, too, for Israelis—Jews, Muslims, Christians and all who call Israel home—as they grieve their dead, send family members into an impossible urban battlefield, and seek the release of the hostages.
And I am grief-stricken for Jews everywhere, plunged into the memories of the Holocaust and tasting its evil in the present. In response to that terrible day, October 7, I stand with them against Hamas, Palestinian Islamic Jihad, Hezbollah, their Iranian backers, and all who celebrate their murderous intentions and acts, painfully aware that on October 7, just when Jewish communities most needed our support, too many Catholics looked the other way and remained silent.
