‘We Remember’: On Holocaust Remembrance Day

Holocaust Remembrance Day (27 January). I did not complete it in time and it was not published until now.
There is a time and a place for everything. Often,
of words are needed. But it is not always appropriate for all words to be delivered in the same breath. This was my thought as I read report after report of Pope Francis’ brief, but widely publicised, words at his Wednesday weekly audience in the lead up to International Holocaust Remembrance Day, 27 January 2024, the date of the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz.
International Holocaust Remembrance Day (IHRD) is a day that involves a solemn act of remembrance of the victims of the Nazi-driven genocidal persecution that raged through Europe, 1933–1945. Catholic remembrance of this period is officially expressed in the document, ‘We Remember: A Reflection on the Shoah’, issued by the Holy See’s Commission for Religious Relations with the Jews in 1998. This ecclesial statement, a decade in the making, attempted to reflect upon the terrible events of the Shoah (Holocaust), aware that
