antisemitism in the form of demonisation of the Jewish State beyond legitimate human rights concerns and political critique.
5. The letter avoids the spectacle of a Catholic Pope lecturing traumatised Jews, who yearn only for peace, about the need for peace. It affirms the robust peacebuilding capacity that is already demonstrated in the admirable works of Jewish individuals, organisations and communities.
6. Importantly, the letter acknowledges Christian moral failings. This includes the sins of centuries of prejudice against Jews and a degree of culpability for the Holocaust. It takes account of the lack of empathy for Jews, expressed as silence and inaction, following October 7 and rising antisemitism.
7. Finally, the letter looks with hope to a future peace realised through common effort. Critically, in the wake of October 7, the Jewish people are assured that they are not alone.
