UNDER 16 TAREE REPORT
This was the 3rd Summer Carnival for many of our team and like Tamworth and Armidale a keen eye is kept on the weather forecast leading up to the event. The rain stayed away and as a bonus it wasn’t that hot either.
The Competition consisted of Representative teams from Tamworth, Far North Coast, Mid North Coast, Hunter Valley, Manly President’s XI, Penrith President’s XI and a Barbarian Team consisting of Roseville, Private School Lodgers and a local player.
Over the course of the next 4 days the boys would play 4 games of cricket in the 50ov, format on Turf pitches.
The Team recorded a 1st up win 7/191cc vs 116 against the Barbarians at Old Bar Oval.. Notable performances were Dylan Bish with 46* and Areeb Rashid 3/27 including a wicket off his 1st ball and his 1st carnival. A nice sea breeze kept the players cool on a hot day and wrapping the game up early allowed the boys to cool off in the surf 5 mins down the road.
The team followed up with a loss 168 vs 70 against runners up Hunter Valley on day 2.
Ed Corby was the pick of the bowlers with 3/16. The batsmen were unable to pierce the slow infield and lost wickets without building partnerships.
Day 3 and the match against Manly Presidents XI at the old Racecourse/Airfield (Cedar Party Reserve). Zac Morris led the batsmen with a fighting 48 before we were bowled out with overs left to spare . A sub-par total of (124) but runs in the bank are worth their weight in bitcoin. A great spell of opening spin bowling by Alec 3/12(off 10) saw Manly in early trouble 5 down for 20. After a recovery Manly was set to win the game until late wickets saw us needing a couple of wickets for a handful of runs. A wide saw the game tied, before a dropped catch had every supporter with their hands on heads. Tom Dickenson with 3/23 picked up the last in his next over to see a tied game. This was one of the most enjoyable games to watch over the 3 years of carnivals.
The Tie saw us qualify 4th and thus a 3rd Place playoff against our old foes Tamworth whom we have played at each carnival. Another great innings from Zac Morris (50) wasn’t enough to post a competitive score with extras the only other in double figures. Tamworth chased down our 80 in the 26th over with the loss of only 2 wickets.
Thus the Cricket Road Trip that has begun in Jan 2016 to Tamworth returned to Armidale came to an end at Taree in 2018. A great privilege and experience for the boys against Regional Representative Players that other club teams don’t get.
The Team took out the prestigious Spirit of Cricket award. A testimony to the way we play our cricket, the sportsmanship of our players and the exuberance of our supporters.
As the coach I have enjoyed every moment of the carnival and cannot thank the players and parents enough for your effort in making this carnival a success.
