Dear Members, I hope that this issue – our first electronic version – finds you well.
I did not appreciate the significance of the moment at the time, but I was witness to three of pioneering perfusionists Syd Yarrow, Bob Stacey and Maurice Robertson at the Great Debate of 1996. This event is described in the article – were you there? They were a link to another more heroic era.
Bob and Maurice again appear in this Gazette with their historical article published in JECT back in 1973 about an ECMO case study – but not ECMO as we now know it. Read it and ponder on their challenges, the rationale for their complex circuit design and the need for ‘... the patient's bed being raised from the floor by 12" blocks’. This was heroic stuff.
Peter Frantzis has also delved into the past of his unit – the Royal Adelaide Hospital – unearthing interesting items that he describes. Interestingly, he shows that in 1962 the cost of a heart-lung machine with associated reusable oxygenator was £2450. That coverts to about $75,000* today – a bargain!
What has become a regular feature in our Gazette is the reprinting of members' articles in international journals. It’s a reminder of the high quality scientific work that is being achieved down here in the Antipodes and an inspiration for other aspiring researchers. Ghazwan Jabur’s notable article, kindly reproduced here from Perfusion, continues on with Auckland City Hospital’s perfusion department’s world leading research in gaseous microemboli during cardiac surgery. While another New Zealander, Jack Bhana, is a contributor of an article on the practical aspects of hyperthermic intrathoracic chemotherapy. Another practical application is presented by
Peter Frantzis, describing the use of VV-ECMO to support a patient while their IVC cancer was resected. All useful stuff – and the sort of practical material that is welcomed by this Gazette. Please keep them coming; a page on an interesting case study, along with cannulation strategies with tips and lessons learnt would be greatly appreciated by the members.
What happening with our newest generation: the students? Phoebe Hafner gives her perspectives on our current training programme – the Master of Science in Extracorporeal Science at the Medical University of South Carolina. We also introduce two young trainees, Aidan Singh Howard and Roma Prangley, and wish them long and rewarding careers in perfusion.
Britney Westbrook describes her experiences visiting two units in New Zealand, Helen Scarrott gives us an overview of the happenings at her unit in far north Queensland – the Townsville University Hospital. And the delights of attending the PDU meeting at Queenstown are described by Monique Brouwer
I’m sure there will be a fantastic experience awaiting those members attending the 3SCTS meeting in Cairns, I wish it the best of success.
Finally, I hope all members will have a rejuvenating Christmas and New Year period – allowing us to be fully recharged for whatever we are faced with next year.
