MEETING REPORT
PDU WINTER MEETING 2022
Monique Brouwer CCP, FANZCP
In August this year I had the good fortune of attending the PDU meeting in Queenstown, New Zealand. I had not attended a winter PDU meeting and so for me the beauty of Queenstown was a first. It seems appropriate that the final PDU meeting, announced only recently, will also be in this very special part of the world.
If you are planning on attending next year’s meeting be sure to book a window seat on the plane. The views are spectacular as you descend and I’ve never flown so close to the mountains!
Livanova takes care of you the moment you land with a waiting shuttle to the Heritage hotel. The Heritage is just outside of town and on a bit of a hill. The morning views are beautiful and the stroll into town is a great way to get the blood flowing (pardon the analogy).
As we had just started flying again after COVID, there were not many attendees from NSWs. The Kiwis, however, are such a friendly group. A shout out to my new friends Val and Amber and to my old friends Steve and Jim (we know each other from Japan!).
The meeting had a strong focus on COVID and ECMO, at least initially, but progressed to include such topics as donor heart preservation and insights into research and its processes. Non-technical issues/communication added a nice human component to remind us of how our differences might impact our working together.
A team building activity was combined with an exhilarating jet boat trip. This was a great opportunity to get out on the water and to see how we can work together even though we all have very different perspectives.
Thank you to the organising committee for their continuous efforts to provide a terrific educational opportunity in a place you want to be.
Kia ora!
