MASTER IN CARDIOVASCULAR PERFUSION AT WESTERN SYDNEY UNIVERSITY (WSU)
Jessica Cantrick
As most of you are aware, the Board has been continuing to explore domestic options for a Master of Perfusion degree as we continue towards the vision of a locally facilitated course in the future.
After over a year of discussions, negotiations, workshops and meetings, I am excited to report that we have been successful in gaining endorsement and approval for the development of a Master of Cardiovascular Perfusion at Western Sydney University (WSU)!
There are a further three university committees that the course must be approved by, which we envisage will occur mid-next year. with the aim to commence the first cohort of students in 2025. It is a big task, but we are hopeful that with effective collaboration we will have a productive and enjoyable experience brining this vision to reality.
In collaboration with the Board, WSU has appointed a Course Development Team (CDT) of three members – Annette Mazzone, PhD (Flinders Medical Centre, SA), Casey Edwards (Australian Blood Management, NSW), and Elena Dosouto (Auckland City Hospital, NZ). This
team will be tasked with developing the course content, assessments, and framework for the program. The CDT will be governed by a Course Advisory Committee and an External Advisory Committee who will guide and bring relevant information to the team to ensure expectations and projected timelines are met.
There continues to be a lot of change and movement in our workforce. Consistent and effective training is one way to help strengthen and future-proof our profession. We believe that having a domestic course will enable more training positions to be created, helping to fill gaps across both Australia and New Zealand, and build a robust and sustainable perfusion workforce.
We know there will be challenges that we have to navigate throughout the process, however, the strong relationship we have formed with the university, the support of our industry partners, and the commitment we have to education as a perfusion board and community will go a long way towards the success of the endeavour and achieving our vision of a domestic Masters course.
