3.3.3 Building the Kingdom Saint Teresa of Kolkata
Mother Teresa was born August 26, 1910 and lived until September 5, 1997. She was 87 when she died and went to heaven. Mother Teresa was an Albanian-born Roman Catholic nun with Indian citizenship who founded the Missionaries of Charity in Calcutta, India in 1950. For over forty years she ministered to the poor, sick, throughout India and then in other countries.
By the 1970s she had become internationally famous for her work with the poor and helpless. She won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 and India’s highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna, in 1980 for her work.
Mother Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity continued to expand, and at the time of her death, the Missionaries of Charity were operating 610 missions in 123 countries, including hospices and homes for people with HIV/AIDS, leprosy and tuberculosis, soup kitchens, children’s and family counseling programs, orphanages, and schools.
Pope. Later in September 2016 Pope Francis declared Teresa to be a saint. We call this canonisation.
