In the beginning was God. God created the world and sent a great wind over the dark waters. Then God created light and night and day.

God made the basis of all material things. He made life and humankind to be like him. It does not mean he made these things in this order or in this time frame. The knowledge of creation comes from God, but was made known to people whose understanding was limited, much as ours is limited. The story was handed down in the language and images of that time.
