Long-lasting romantic love is one of the greatest gifts of human existence. It often provides transcendent amounts of joie-de-vivre, dramatically boosts self- esteem, and can greatly decrease loneliness, financial hardship and nihilism. It can change your life from quiet desperation to jubilant elation almost overnight.
A good love may become your primary meaning
in life and can spawn many other gratifying meanings. From Helen’s influence in launching a thousand Trojan ships to Valentino’s fluttering of a hundred-thousand American hearts to Stormy Daniel’s harassing President Trump’s triumphal libido, love constantly reminds us it is one of the major forces, miracles and miscreants of nature.
However, love may also cause exquisite, devastating suffering. The sexual revolution of the 1960s nourished hopes of relieving much of the pain. But for many it merely propelled them into a world with no romantic guideposts and where horrible disillusionment is an all too frequent outcome.
