Because of the great audacity involved in liberal liberation we should also show extreme compassion for ourselves. Tolerance of our own learning curves will help us sail the uncharted seas of freethinking. Yes, we do want to think as expansively as possible
no matter what traditional folkways are challenged by the journey. But we don’t want to become skeptical nihilists who believe in nothing and for whom life
has no meaning or happiness. Without sufficient affirmation and joie de vivre no conservative will want to follow in our footsteps, our message will be too strident, and our happiness consumed by cynicism.
Carl Sagan said it well:
It seems to me what is called for is an exquisite balance between two conflicting needs: the most skeptical scrutiny of all hypotheses that are served up to us, and at the same time a great openness
to new ideas ... If you are only skeptical, then no new ideas make it through to you ... On the other hand, if you are open to the point of gullibility and have not an ounce of skeptical sense in you, then you cannot distinguish the useful ideas from the worthless ones.8
