Of course, that was before the human mind could imagine evolution and the Big Bang. On the other hand, both of these theories only set Deist creation back about three billion and fourteen billion years respectively.
I believe that most liberals have attained the freedom of thought exhibited by our founding geniuses but made more accurate by the discoveries of evolution and other sciences. We can now freely conceive of the possibility of the meaningless void of the universe, while at the same time conceive the possibility of a meaning-making God.
Vonnegut may have explained some of these different conceptions of God. He writes about aliens who came to planet Earth to find out how Christians could be so cruel despite having such a kind person — Jesus — as their main role model. Since it was clear that Jesus was God’s son they decided the gospel’s main message was: “Before you kill somebody make sure they aren’t well connected.” And the corollary to this law: “There are right people to lynch.”
The aliens suggested changing the story to one in which a low-down bum was crucified for fun, but while it was happening God adopted the bum as his son and co-ruler of the universe. He then thundered: “From this moment on I’ll punish horribly anyone who torments a bum who has no connections.”37
