The God-shaped hole in the soul
The fact remains that Liberals seem saddled
with most of the responsibility for that part of the future that is human-guided. Whereas most religious conservatives believe God will save the day no matter what humans do. Liberals can find help for Earth- saving in the unlikely ally of Nietzsche who is often classified as a warmonger. Yet he sometimes arrived at peaceful conclusions similar to those of Jesus. Wrote Nietzsche:
We must abjure the doctrine of the army as
a means of self-defense just as completely as the desire for conquests...Rendering oneself unarmed when one had been the best-armed, out of height of feeling — that is the means to real peace, which always rests on peace of mind.
