Liberating Liberals
In a way each day we plow through a thick soup of meaninglessness, trying to leave meaning in our wake. We’re like an artist hoping to shape chaos into art, a scientist experimenting to impose a theory on random fact, a sperm seeking an egg to make another meaning-making being.

Meaning-making sometimes leads to a crisis described by James Taylor:
So much for your moment of prayer. God’s not at home, there is no there there. Lost in the stars, that’s what you are.
Left here on your own.
You can only hope to live on this earth,
This here is it, for what it’s worth,

For an unbeliever like you,

Even though you hate to surrender, you have to surrender,
we must find you a way to
look up from your life.60
When meaning seems to be waning we freethinking liberals need to be able to “look up from” [our lives] to create our own transcendent meanings. Civilization, no matter how meaningless or meaningful
