Church was a big focus. Sometimes I
thought of not going but it was easier to go than to buck Dad. It was just part of our routine.
“Why don’t you attend church?” asked the minister.
“Well, the first time I went they threw water on me. The second time they tied a woman to me and I’ve had to keep her ever since.”
“Yes,” said the minister, “and the next time you go they’ll throw dirt on you.”
I was baptized in Ragsdell Creek with total emersion in white pants and shirt, and a black tie. Fish the creek during the week and use it to baptize on Sunday.
When the preacher immersed Susan she came up shouting: “I was lost but now I’m found. I saw St. Gabriel when I went down.”
