would be drinking moonshine and ready to fight. Once we had a tense, close game against archrival Sulligent and the spectators got in a big fight. Someone saw a gun so our coach terminated the game.
In a close game the referee suddenly grabbed the ball and stepped off 10 yards. “How come?” cried the penalized coach. “Coaching from the sidelines,” said the ref.
“But that’s 15 yards,” yelled the coach.
“I know,” retorted the referee, “but with your kind of coaching, 10 yards will be enough.”
We were called the Hamilton Aggies for Agriculture. My senior year we went 7 and 1, losing only to Guin of course. Our coach was from Ole Miss and he got me a tryout there after the season. Everyone at the tryout was faster, bigger and could kick further than me. I think I could have made it but I’d sure of had to work at it. I was more interested in education.
One of the advantages of playing foot- ball is that the coach would take some of us to Birmingham to buy end zone seats at Legion Field for twenty-five cents. We saw Alabama,
