Chapter I
Distant past...
In the beginning I was in love with only my mother. I was mentally monogamous with her in a way. It was so easy. She was cozy, fragrant and fun. She looked sort of like a playful Vivian Leigh in the first half of Gone With the Wind. Sigmund Freud said I wanted her forever. Only she had a husband and other kids, so my first experience with monogamy was often interrupted.
Oh what a mother lover I was. She wanted a good boy. From first grade on I was almost always class monitor, was deeply embarrassed when someone else acted up, and completed assignments best and fastest.
She was also a good Christian. In the second grade some kids were ridiculing absent Jim in the cavernous cafeteria.
“In we really want to walk in the footsteps of Jesus we will not say foul things about our fellow man,” I said.
“What?” said fat and freckled Kiefer. “We’re just eatin’ and talkin’.”
“No. You were bearing false witness.”
“Good grief Dan,” said Kiefer, splashing his fork in muddy mashed potatoes.
“Someday you’re gonna take goody goody too far and...”
“Dan, you haven’t eaten your prunes,” interrupted our pleasant, white-haired
teacher, coming to see about the ruckus rising above the pandemonium of two hundred eating kids. We lived in the state of Alabama and her name was, coincidently, Mrs. Birmingham.
