Making bursary
offers is one of the best things I get to do as Head Master.
We recently discovered an old admissions book in a school safe. It gave a fascinating insight into the background of every boy in the school. At a glance, we could see the occupation of their parents – doctors, company directors, accountants and engineers. But this book from 1900 also listed painters, tailors and local policemen.
Not everything was better about life in 1900 – and, of course, those boys whose names were inked into the book would be the very same boys who would go on to witness the horrors of the Western Front. Yet, it was striking, at a different time and with a completely different educational structure nationally, Warwick School was accessible to all families, regardless
of parental income.
Independent schools offer help with fees when they can.
Nearly 100 boys receive means-tested support at Warwick and recently we have offered bursary places to a further 12 boys. Making these offers is one of the best things I get to do as Head Master. I believe in it. We would have liked to help twice that number; indeed we would love to offer places regardless of parents’ ability to fund them, but we need more resources. We have a duty to offer more of these transformative experiences, support social mobility and change lives.
