Cambridge Union Schools’
Debating
Eight of our Senior Debaters: Milan Oakland, Elliot Cosnett, Gabriel D’Souza, Jonty Wood, Angus Day, Atticus Walton-Hayfield,
Sebastian Duffy and Arjan Paneser, competed in the regional stage of the Cambridge Union Schools’ Debating Competition this term.
It was a day-long event with four rounds of British Parliamentary-style debating. Motions were varied, tackling a range of social and political issues that required the debaters to draw on their wider knowledge and critical thinking skills to develop robust and compelling arguments.
The four teams performed extremely well throughout the competition, debating with technical skill and handling topics with insight and creativity. Overall, three of our teams were placed first in at least one round and they all received some excellent feedback and high scores from the judges.
Arjan Paneser and Sebastian Duffy placed particularly highly as a result of two wins and a second placing, which left them tied on team points with several teams at the top of the ranking. A huge well done to all of our Senior Debaters.
International Competition for
Young Debaters
On Saturday, 6 March our youngest debaters took part in the prestigious International Competition for Young Debaters.
Teams from around the world participated in this year’s online competition. All our debaters spoke fantastically well with some very impressive team performances across all four rounds of the competition. Well done to all the boys who took part.
Upper Sixth
Chemistry Olympiad
Thirteen Lower Sixth and 2 Upper Sixth
students took part in the 2 hour Chemistry

Achieving a certificate is magnificent,
especially in the Lower Sixth, as the
Chemistry Olympiad is aimed at the best Upper Sixth Chemistry students.
Congratulations to the following boys who were awarded certificates: Gold (top 8.9% of entrants nationally): Will Knights. Silver: Patrick Dickins (L6), Peter Dobson and Ibrahim Miah (L6). Bronze (all L6): Ben Colliver, Seva Gill, Alex Robinson, Ben Shipton and Harvey Zhang.
          Higher Education Evening
This term, the School hosted a virtual Higher Education Evening aimed at the Lower Sixth. Parents, guardians and boys were able to access a variety of talks to help them prepare for the next stage of the academic journey.
During the evening there were talks by Mrs Bell, Head of Sixth Form; Dr Chapman, Senior Deputy Head;
Mr Tapper-Gray, Head of Careers and Volunteering and Mr Cooley, Head of UCAS.
Talks focused on the application process, predicted grades, personal statements, how to research universities, and what boys can be doing now to help their future applications. In addition, there was information about Student Finance, Unifrog and Oxbridge.
