WETLANDS

Is the preservation of wetlands important? Some of the most important reasons
to pay attention to wetlands is flood control, clean water, and wildlife habitat.
Wetlands are often small in size and not easily identified but they are some of the
most important features in our landscape, especially when it comes to providing
flood protection and clean water for our area. Wetlands are often found along
river banks where they can empty into larger bodies of water, but they are also
found in less obvious areas such as flat fields where the water can pool and
slowly seep back into the groundwater. Because they may be small, at certain
times of the year wetlands do not hold water, but in the spring they usually come
to life and provide large quantities of food for migrating birds, as well as
amphibians and reptiles. For all of the above reasons, it is important for all of us
to encourage the preservation of our wetlands. For more information about
wetlands, visit www.theconservationfoundation.org. Also, to learn more about
protecting our environment, plan to attend 2018 Eco-Fest on March 17, 2018 at
Gateway Technical College. See gtc.edu/ecofest.
