Lesson 8: Using the Correlation Coe cient
• Use technology to nd the correlation coe cient.
• Use the correlation coe cient to describe a relationship between two variables.
Lesson Narrative
The mathematical purpose of this lesson is to compute (using technology) and interpret the correlation coe cient for a bivariate, numerical data set. The work of this lesson connects to previous work because students learned how to read and interpret the correlation coe cient. The work of this lesson connects to upcoming work because students will learn to distinguish between correlation and causation.
When students use the value of the correlation coe cient to describe the relationship between two variables, they are engaging in MP7 because they are looking for and making use of structure.
Required Preparation
Students should have access to graphing technology that can compute the least-squares regression line and correlation coe cient from a set of bivariate data.
Student Learning Goals
• Let’s look closer at correlation coe cients.
8.1 Putting the Numbers in Context
Warm Up: 5 minutes
The mathematical purpose of this activity is for students to match bivariate data with its context. Monitor for students who discuss linear relationships or variability in the data.
Launch
Arrange students in groups of two to four. Provide access to the scatter plots and contexts for the warm-up.
Student Task Statement
Match the variables to the scatter plot you think they best t. Be prepared to explain your reasoning.
