Lesson 8 Practice Problems
Problem Statement
The number of hours worked, , and the total dollars earned, , have a strong positive relationship.
Explain what it means to have a strong positive relationship in this situation.
Solution
Sample solution: A strong relationship means that the relationship between the hours worked and the total dollars earned is very close to being linear. The positive relationship means that the total dollars earned increases as the number of hours worked increases.
Problem Statement
The number of miles driven, , and the number of gallons remaining in the gas tank, , have a strong negative relationship.
Explain what it means to have a strong negative relationship in this context.
Solution
Sample solution: A strong relationship means that knowing the number of miles driven or the number of gallons remaining, along with the line of best t, will produce a good estimate for the other variable. The negative relationship means that the number of gallons remaining in the tank decreases as the number of miles increases.
Problem Statement
The number of minutes on the phone and the customer satisfaction rating have a weak negative relationship.
Explain what it means to have a weak negative relationship in this context.
Solution
Sample solution: A weak relationship means that the relationship between number of minutes on the phone and the customer satisfaction rating shows a linear trend, but the line of best t does not produce good estimates of the actual data. The negative relationship means the customer satisfaction rating decreases as the number of minutes on the phone increases.
