4. How much pizza do you get per dollar with this slice?
Student Response
1. square centimeters because . That’s approximately 1,256.6 square centimeters.
2. , or roughly 0.3, because there are radians around the whole circle. This is a little less than of the pizza.
3. 400 square centimeters.
4. 80 square centimeters per dollar.
Activity Synthesis
Ask students to share the conversations they had with their partners. Ask students to share what disagreements they had and how they worked to reach agreement. The main takeaway from discussion is that it’s possible to nd the area of a slice by multiplying the area of the whole by the fraction taken up by one slice.
4.3 Pizza Palooza
20 minutes
In this activity, students work as a class to compare various deals on pizza slices at a pizza festival. This activity provides an interesting opportunity to showcase the strategic use of spreadsheet technology to answer questions about a context from data (MP4).
Launch
Create a spreadsheet with Elena’s data pre- lled. Arrange students in groups of 4. Assign each group a speci c slice to look at and quantify how good a deal it is.
Student Task Statement
Elena nished her research about the Pizza Palooza festival. She was able to list the price, angle measure, and radius of several kinds of pizza slices. She used a protractor that measured angles in radians, but also estimated a few radian measures with decimals.
