Activity Synthesis
Display several responses for all to see. Ask students what they notice and what they wonder. If not mentioned by students, point out that it seems like many kinds of triangles have circles that t snugly around them, but only some quadrilaterals do. Explain that when a circle goes through all of the vertices of a polygon, it’s called a circumscribed circle.
10.2 Fair Placement
15 minutes
In this activity, students use ideas from perpendicular bisector constructions they learned about in the rst unit to nd a the circumcenter and circumscribed circle of a triangle.
Launch
Remind students of the “Who is Closest?” activity from the nal lesson of the rst unit, where students had to decide how to divide a city into regions based on which points were closer to certain pizza delivery stores than others. Explain that they will solve a similar problem involving the placement of a school that will serve three surrounding small towns. Explain that the goal is to nd where the school should be built so that it is the same distance away from each town.
Student Task Statement
There are 3 small towns, , , and :
