Ask students to share responses as time allows. Ask students,
• “What would happen as the height gets further and further away, like if you were as far away as the sun?” (The points of tangency get closer and closer to enveloping half of Earth. So from very far away, it’s possible to see almost half the circumference of Earth, but never more than that.)
• “Compare the two distances related to the Petronas Towers. Why are those distances so similar? How would this be di erent if the tower were signi cantly shorter or taller? Think about the extremes.” (The radius of the earth is so large compared to the height of the building that those distances look nearly the same. This will be true until the height of the object becomes signi cant in comparison to Earth’s radius. The sun, 150 billion meters away, will have an analogous arc that is roughly the circumference of Earth, which is only millions
of meters.)
